Whats the drinking age for Canada. I'm going there Saturday. I beleive its still 18, but be carefull if your hitting the bar scene and make sure you go with some freinds. We used to go to Toronto alot when we were kids because of the 18year old drinking age. Anyways lets just say there was some interesting stuff going on. Great times though.

Whats the drinking age for Canada. I'm going there Saturday. Probably too late for what you were trying to find out, but it depends on what province you're in. Most of the country is 19, but Quebec is 18.

Couple new ones that I enjoyed this weekend.
Brewery Castle Eggenberg-Samichlaus Bier (2007): (A-)This is a 14% dopplebock brewed in Austria and open aged for 10 months before bottling. You've heard of "Hop Bomb" well this was a "Malt Bomb" and due to liquor laws it has to be classified as a Malt Liquor here in the states. Anyway its basically a rediculously strong lager that tatses like candied plumbs crazy malt and alcohol heat. A sipper or night cap but excellent.
Castle Eggenberg-Urbock Dunkel Eisbock: (B+) This one was an Eisbock, sister brewery of the above beer and rather similar, except less alcohol and a much lighter appearance.
Rogue Ale's-Brutal Bitter: (A-) Another american IPA this won tasted like sour red grapefruit in a good way.

BTW Rogue's Dead Guy Ale is actually a Bock ... its actually got its own rare subdivision of being a Maibock, dubbed for the brewer "John Maier", I believe he was the brewmaster who turned things around for Anchor Steam and one of the Anchor's falls in this category also. He is now the brewmaster of Rogue.
Dead Guy Ale is also the best beer currently brewed in the US ... IMHO of course.

It's up there, no doubt, but there are several brews from Dogfish Head, Stone, and Allagash (just to name a few) that I'd rank ahead of Dead Guy. Hell, I'm not sure I'd even list Dead Guy as Rogue's best offering. IMO, that would be the Hazelnut Brown Nectar.

Intersting, I never heard that maibock was a style named after John Maier, I always thought the Mai was for may in another language. Anyway since I have never tried Dead Guy Ale I cannot dispute your opinion that its the best beer brewed in the good old USA, LOL. The great part is that there are so many great ones that we can all argue happily about which is the best.

Dogfish makes a good brew, no doubt, and is aimed at trying to match Dead Guy's record setting IBU levels ... but still lacks the consistency of a Dead Guy. It's definitely close enough to compare though. But I really have to have to question your opinion by putting Allagash in the same tier as Rogue. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed many 6 packs of Allagash White and Tripel Ale, and equally enjoyed the price tag (I remember Williams grocery selling Allagash for 5 bucks a 6 pack). But Allagash is just not on the Rogue quality level. Belgian style beers are just better left to the Belgians and possibly the Canadiens (Unibrau), no one else seems to get to their level of craftmanship. Hazelnut Brown is one of my favorite beers to have on tap while eating a roast beef sandwich or some kind of food. I really would never consider it as an "every/any day beer". And the bottled version does it no justice, it must be poured through a tap and drank through a pint glass.

Dead Guy sits at 40 IBUs... that's high for most tastes, but Dogfish has blown that out of the water with several of their brews. Just as examples, 90 min IPA is 90 IBUs and 120 Min IPA is 120 IBUs. As for Allagash, Belgian Ales (particularly Trappist Ales) are among my favorite brews at the moment, and Allagash is the lone American brewery (aside from possibly New Belgium in Colorado) that even comes close to doing them justice. Have you ever tried Allagash Four? I know several "beer snobs" that consider that to be quite possibly the best beer they've ever tasted, myself included. In terms of Unibroue, I lived in Montreal for a year so Unibroue was about all I drank during that time... and my personal opinion is that Allagash blows them out of the water. But hey, opinions are like assholes right? Everyone has one and they all stink. I think we can all agree on the fact that we're extremely lucky to have ready access to such quality beers that are made right here in the good ol' USA that rival anything that's made in Europe. Not to mention we've got access to a lot of the European stuff as well. There's literally something out there for every taste.

Hmmmm .... I stand corrected, ya know I can almost vividly remember reading the IBU's off the Dead Guy tap at the Blue Tusk and seeing 128 and remember being told this was the highest out there. Now this was probably 13 years ago, so I very well may be confused. I may be confusing it with Old Crusty.
Like I said, I enjoyed many a Allagash, but they don't sell it down here, so none recently. I can however get Leffe for 9 bucks a six pack and Chimay Blue for 12 bucks / six. Between them 2 and the occasional Unibroue, that takes care of my Belgian fix pretty well.

That's one of the things I like about Mass... they've got some screwy laws regarding when and where alcohol can be sold, but there are no regulations regarding what can be sold. As a result, I get to try a lot of stuff that a lot of people just don't have access to. I've had a bunch of special release brews from Allagash that were flat out phenomenal and, like I said, I'm not exaggerating at all when I say that Allagash Four might be the best beer I've ever tried. Speaking of Rogue, have you ever tried their Chipotle Ale? I see it every time I go to the liquor store but something about chipotle in a beer just scares me, so I haven't had the guts to try it yet.

Hey, look at that ... we all find something we agree on. Beer is supposed to cool you down after EATING chipolte, not drinking it. Since all are in favor ... we have a new man law, settled!
