I really don't remember this guy...but he's fighting in CBS's new Mixed Martial Arts cage fighting... "Story: Raised and fighting out of the mining town of Minersville, PA, Jon Murphy led an atypical life growing up. Coming from a good family and excelling in athletics while growing up, Murphy attended the University of Syracuse on a football scholarship, playing on the same team as Eagles’ QB Donovan McNabb. However, Murphy’s life would take a dark turn during college when he began to question his desire to play football and left school early." He's taking on Brett Rogers in a few minutes Here's his fighting profile: jonmurphy.proelite.com/

Was browsing the scout football forums and someone over there caught it too. Here's some more information TexanMark provided about Murphy:
"This is what I remember---He was recruit Jonathan Murphy and was a fairly good recruit...he was a drama queen though. He was late to camp--his Dad said he was coming, then he said he was not coming (girlfriend issues)...IIRC, he did arrive or start the drive up eventually only to turn around and go back to his girlfriend. His Dad was apologetic and pissed about the whole thing--the guy wasn't ready to commit to FB and college. If he was on campus it wasn't more than a day or two. No way did he play on the team...he was a linebacker recruit but never even suited up for one practice."
....I still don't remember him.

Any of you guys know the rules???Thanks Pretty much the only thing there that's legal is the choke with the forearm. In the original days of UFC a lot of that stuff was a little more accepted, but they've toned it down over the years in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. More or less, it's just what the the name of the sport implies... mixed martial arts... if it's not legal in one of the stand alone martial arts, it's probably not legal in MMA... so no using the cage as a weapon, no choking with the hands (though that would be pretty tough with those gloves anyway), no small joint manipulation, no knees or kicks to a downed opponent, no strikes to the back of the head, no groin shots, etc.

Did anyone catch the ear on the dude that Kimbo Slice was fighting? That thing had a life of its own and had us all dying laughing. Even the announcer couldn't help himself and had to take a few jabs: "The Alien Life form that used to be (fighters name) left ear."LOL. " His ear exploded like a piniata of blood."LOL. Those arn't exact quotes but pretty close.
The fight with the two middle weights was excellent and it sucked that they stopped it. They were really taking turns beeting on each other, its amazing that the challanger maid it out of the first round and that the champ got out of the secound round. I'll be trying to watch that rematch.
Unfortunately for me I missed the chicks fight because I arrived to the parrty a little late.

Yeah, that's by far the worst case of cauliflower ear I've ever seen. I honestly think the gruesomeness of what it looked like when it popped open (you could actually see the blood squirt out in HD) had something to do with why the fight was stopped. I think it's the same basic reason for stopping the Lawler/Smith fight as well. I really think that the refs were told prior to the fight that they needed to be mindful that this was on prime time network TV and to be wary of anything that might be "too hot for TV"... the last thing they'd want is to scare a bunch of people away that tuned in for the first time because it was too brutal.

Very true Eldiablo, but the Lawler/Smith fight the doctor stopped because of an inadvertant eye poke wich was far less brutal than the rest of that fight.
The guy with the cauliflower ear should be happy the ref stopped the fight his eyes were rollin around all over the place and he even took a swipe at the ref. The ref could have waited but another punch or two and that guy was going to be out cold anyway he still had this crazy didn't know what was going on look in his eyes three minutes later when he embraced Kimbo.

Yeah, there's no doubt in my mind that Thompson was done. Normally fights like that are allowed to go until the guy gets knocked out, but I think they wanted to avoid that. Same with Smith. I think they saw the writing on the wall that he couldn't see and was likely to get pounded if they let the fight continue. Point being I think they were much more likely to err on the side of caution than they normally would.

Well if Smith couldn't see out of that eye he definately would have gotten pounded, thats a good point and I agree that they were purpossly instructed to err on the side of caution.
On a side Note Kimbo has obviously been training in some sort of grappling and wrestling. He lost to Thomson when on the matt but he did do some good things. I also think his two DDT take downs hurt Thompson and softened him up even if he ended up on the matt. IF Kimbo can improve and become a good wrestler he could really take off in MMA.

He really needs to work on his cardio... he was clearly gassed by the end of the first round. Although that was the amazing thing, even though he had nothing left, he was throwing absolute bombs that were clearly hurting Thompson. The one thing that's going to work against Kimbo at this point is his age. He's already 34, so he's got a limited window left to really be competitive in the sport. I agree with you that he showed some things that I didn't expect, although some of those "wrestling" and "jiu-jitsu" moves were more pure power than real technique. Plus he looked lost when Thompson had him against the cage in the 2nd round. A better fighter would've destroyed him in that situation. Having said that, he showed some signs of being a legit MMA fighter and not just a brawler, plus he's got one of the best in the business in his corner. Bas Rutten isn't exactly a household name, but he's one of the most respected guys in the game and if anyone can mold Kimbo into a real fighter, it's Bas. I just hope that they don't throw him in over his head too soon. He needs to just continue fighting low level fighters for a while and get some experience before they throw him in against a guy like Rogers or, even worse, one of the elite UFC guys.

Its funny some of the people I was watching with had no idea it was only Kimbo's 3rd fight. They thought he was already the champ or something. LOL. Yes his conditioning was horrible, strength was great and he seemed completely unphased by anything landed on him. Still he was probably losing on the score card going into the 3rd and I noted to my buddy that he really needed to knock Thompson out and probably in a hurry, which he did. Agreed he is no where neer ready for an elite fighter, probably needs about 3-4 more fights on the level of Thomson that each have different styles just to figure out what other guys will try to do with him.
