The voice of my youth in sports. May the "agony of defeat" line last forever. YOU HAVE THAT RIGHT FOR SURE sforange !!!!!! Only old guys like me in their late 40's to to late 50's can know that Wide World of Sports every Saturday was something VERY special with Jim McKay !!!!!! They had sports back then that you never saw like ice barrel jumping, demolition derbys, and OFCOURSE ski jumping !!!! On a side note mooman still watches ice barrel jumping LOL !!! Just joking mooman !!! I was at a PGA golf tourney about 20 years ago(can't remember which one) at Oak Hill and I was just standing there and a guy next to me said "that was a nice shot." I turn to my right and it was Jim McKay !!!( I had a special badge so we were in a nice area)I didn't really recognize him cuz he was almost 70(just there as a spectator not working the touney),but then I did !!!! We talked for 10 minutes just the 2 of us,I told him about how Wide World of Sports was sooooo special to me and he thanked me and and we both moved on. I never forgot about that and when I realized he died at 87 I was sadden and remembered that day like it was yesterday !!

He helped define sports broadcasting. A legendary figure whose voice brings you back to your youth the minute you hear it. RIP.

Saturday afternoon of my youth ALWAYS meant watching Wide World of Sports. This south central PA girl thrilled at the sight of Franz Klammer hurtling down the mountainside or marveled at the 4 and 2 men bobsled. While I never took up skiing (not much snow here), over 20 years later I had the pleasure of riding the 'bob at Lake Placid first in summer, then in winter...what a RUSH!
RIP Jim McKay.
